Using PNF Stretching to Improve Flexibility

January 23, 2016

Heading towards the end of January already and if I'm honest I still haven't settled into a good routine where I am devoting enough time into my own training, but when times are busy just do the best you can and make the most out of a few spare moments you can find. Sometimes in the evening after a hot bath I'll sit in front of the fire with my partner and do some stretching then, with the help of his feet on my knees or back! I will go through some partner stretches you can do together in future blogs.

We talked about PNF stretching last week and I want to show you another stretch that uses this technique this time to improve your hip flexibility and work towards your box (side) split using the same method of contract-relax.

So starting in a frog-like position with ankles lined up with knees and knees lined up with hips, start to relax and get comfortable in this position..

Hope the video helps, if you have any questions please get in touch!

Events coming up: ActiFit has a couple of great events coming up soon, if you fancy challenging your fitness or trying something new? This Friday 29th January there will be a Floor Flow Workshop in Tavistock. It starts at 7pm and costs just £5 for an hour of contemporary dance moves and transitions along with traditional pole floor work, creating shapes, movement and travel across the floor. A fantastic and fun way to tone the entire body by using your own body-weight. Transitions can also be used for floor work in pole routines. There is also a 4 week introduction to Aerial Hoop course starting 1st March, space is limited so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.

Quick Chicken Noodle Soup: On a busy day it is so easy to just grab anything that is quick and easy, without paying too much attention to the macro nutrient balance which is important if we are looking to maintain a lean physique or shift a few pounds. I always make sure I have plenty of homemade ready meals in the freezer so all I need to do is bake a potato, zap some frozen chili and I have a healthy lunch or dinner, however if you stock pile is getting low here is my favorite Japanese inspired quick and easy soup recipe.

Ingredients:

Makes 1

Chicken Breast

2 Mushrooms

2 Spring Onions

Handful of Green Beans, Sugar Snap Peas or similar

1 tsp Fresh Red Chili

Zest and Juice of 1 Lime

1 tsp Fresh Ginger

Chicken Stock

1 tsp Coconut Oil

30g Noodles - I used pumpkin ginger and rice noodles for a wheat and gluten free alternative

Cut Chicken into bite-size pieces and fry in coconut oil, whilst chicken is cooking boil water and cook noodles - drain and leave to one side. To the stock add the mushrooms, greens, chili, ginger and lime cook for 3-4 minutes. Place noodles in a bowl and added the cooked chicken, pour stock over the noodles and sprinkle chopped spring onions on top, and gobble up immediately!

Run Club: Every Saturday at 8:30am outside Bodyzone in Tavistock there is a small and friendly run club as part of Tavistock ABC, please come along if you would like to improve you Cardio Vascular fitness and increase your speed and explosive strength with some hill sprints!

As always please let me know if there is anything specific you'd like help or advice with and I will do my best!
